Surgical Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract
|
|
|
Chronic ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the mucosa of the colon and rectum of uncertain etiology. Though it can be effectively controlled with diet, sulfasalazine and steroids, eventually a significant portion of patients
require
operation, with the realization that colectomy does not reflect a therapeutic failure but rather a permanent cure.
It has been demonstrated that patients have an extremely high level of satisfaction and performance after total abdominal colectomy and mucosal proctectomy with ileoanal anastomosis, which may lead the conclusion that it is currently the
operation
of
choice for young patients and for most adults requiring elective proctocolectomy for chronic ulcerative colitis.
